Busy in Preparation for Baby

I am eager to get something on the page so I can go to bed. I realize this isn’t the right approach to a serious writing practice, but right now it’s 10 pm on a Friday night and I’ve spent the last several days getting up early and working all day helping to get prepared for Liz and Ron’s baby, who is due to arrive sometime in the next week or so.

The day before yesterday, Liz, Rachael, and I did a deep clean of Liz and Ron’s living space. That’s on hands and knees, digging in those spots usually left unseen. But not with little baby Betty on his/her way. Everything must be clean!

Yesterday, I helped Rachael repair windows in her little camper so that she can be more comfortable when she is up from LA. We did lots of measuring, cutting, and attaching. A satisfying day’s work, I must admit.

Today, we worked in the kitchen, which Ray has been renovating. He has put in new cabinets, a dishwasher, and a new sink. A new electric water heater is on its way as well. I cleaned all the cabinets, put in shelf-liner, and also helped Ray cut the spot for the sink in the big wooden countertop. After we were done, then Ron came in and sanded the countertop and applied Danish wood oil to it. Three coats over three days will seal the wood so it doesn’t stain.

Tomorrow, Liz and I can put the dishes back in the cabinets and get things tidy. It will be the middle of next week before all the plumbing is in place, but we’re almost there.

So, yes, it’s been a collective effect to get everything in ship-shape order for the new baby in the family.

Now if he or she can just wait for a few more days, we’ll actually be finished. However, if there’s a surprise arrival in the next little while, no problem. We’ll all be very happy to see this new little bundle of joy and the work will still get done.

A busy, but happy time. Now, off to bed!
