Villanelle: Beyond My Door

I am practicing with this tough form of poetry. With the guidance of Chat GPT, I am learning how to write one of these. Chat does not write it. I ask, “Help me with the process, step by step.” Here’s my effort. I am in learning mode.

Beyond My Door

There is such suffering beyond my door
Do what I can, and not look away
How can I keep my joy and not betray?

With so much sorrow breaking on each shore
Do what I can, and not look away
There is such suffering beyond my door

While I stand safe from what others can’t ignore
Do what I can, and not look away
How can I keep my joy and not betray?

Injustice shakes me more and more
Do what I can, and not look away
There is such suffering beyond my door

I have been shocked awake as never before
Do what I can, and not look away
How can I keep my joy and not betray?

I choose to face what I once chose to ignore
Do what I can, and not look away
There is such suffering beyond my door
How can I keep my joy and not betray?
