Tomorrow is Publication Day!

Hi all,

I’m happy to say that my book is already on Amazon for pre-order and on Barnes and Noble for sale. It’s $2.99, so please support me in being brave enough to put it out after having it in my desk drawer for fifteen years. (Of course, I did rewrite it another ten times!) Also, if you could write a short review on Goodreads or Amazon, something simple with only a few lines, that would be wonderful.

I asked several people to read the book before publication so I could get some advance reviews. Below is what they wrote.

“A compelling story of a family’s hope in a time of heartbreaking loss and a woman—Hope—learning who she is and who she can be, finding her voice and giving voice to those who are suffering. Richly authentic, uplifting, and deeply imagined, from a writer to watch.” Susan Wittig Albert, NYT’s bestselling author, and author of Someone Always Nearby: A Novel of Georgia O’Keeffe and Maria Chabot

“Len Leatherwood’s Hope in a Time of Dying is a beautifully crafted, deeply moving novel that transports readers to the devastating era when AIDS was a death sentence, reshaping families, relationships, and entire communities. With a keen eye for detail and an open heart, Leatherwood explores the intricate bonds of love, loss, and resilience through the unforgettable character of Hope. Leatherwood’s storytelling is both tender and unflinching, capturing the complexities of family dynamics with authenticity and grace.” Grace Sammon, award-winning novelist, radio host, and the 2025 recipient of the Indies United Publishing Inspirational Woman in Literature, Media, and Publishing Award

“Len Leatherwood, an accomplished writer, author, therapist, and nationally known, award-winning writing coach, explores vulnerability and courage in Hope in a Time of Dying. Just as she lives from her heart, she writes from the heart in this debut novel. Markedly universal in nature, the story involves complex family dynamics amidst the wreckage of betrayal, illness, and loss, revealing the transformative power of love even when challenges seem insurmountable.” Jeanne Guy, award-winning novelist and Kindle #1 Best Seller of You’ll Never Find Us: A Memoir

“Len Leatherwood chronicles a volatile tale of her main character Hope’s efforts to help her brother with AIDS at a time when life-saving medications are only accessible through a lottery system. As Hope uncovers Robert’s business and health challenges, she struggles to maintain her integrity and support her family under the most trying of situations. Leatherwood’s eloquent writing exposes the flaws and weaknesses of all involved. You’ll find yourself rooting for Hope as she navigates life in-the-moment with life going-forward. This book gives an unflinching view into the world of AIDS and the suffering and challenges of all involved, interspersed with moments of hope and love. Hope in a Time of Dying is a must-read.” Jude Walsh, bestselling author of Post-Divorce Bliss: Ending Us and Finding Me

Hope in a Time of Dying is a story of the unconditional love of a sister for her brother. The one brother who was always there for her in a family rooted in denial. Ride the emotional roller coaster of addiction against the heartbreaking backdrop of the AIDS epidemic of the last century. Meet a woman who fights to change the trajectory of both diseases for herself and her family.” Eileen Harrison Sanchez, award-winning author of Freedom Lessons

I also wanted you to see the book’s front and back covers. My daughter Liz did the cover art, and I am very pleased with it. I hope you’ll agree.

Thank you all for supporting my writing over all these years. You are my homies, and I so appreciate your presence in my life.

Big hugs to all,

Len
