I wrote this song shortly after writing the one I posted last night. I sent it to Sam this morning and we’ll see what comes of it in our songwriting collaboration. As Sam said last night when I sent him the first song, “We’re songwriting again. How fun!” Yes, yes, and yes.
I’m in “Beginner’s Mind” as they say in Buddhism with my songwriting. That is a place where nothing exceptional is expected as one dips a toe in a new undertaking. There is true freedom in that mindset. It’s a great way to keep that nasty Inner Critic away. Just try. Have fun. Follow your intuition. Be easy on yourself.
Again, yes, yes, and yes.
Here’s the song:
Can't Sleep Tonight
I can’t sleep tonight
The stars are out and the moon’s too bright
All I can think about is you, my dear
And how our love is oh so clear
The day you walked into my life
You took away my pain and strife
You smiled so sweetly
Opened your heart completely
I feel your love like a big bright sun
Its warmth leaves me so undone
All I want is to lie back and smile
And know that you are here with me for a while
I can’t sleep tonight
Time has passed and so has the light
You are gone and I rattle on
My nights are dark, there is no dawn
I know you want me to right myself
Stop my tears, get off the shelf
You said to listen for our love
In the cooing of the mourning dove
I listen and often hear
That melancholy sound oh so clear
The moon is out, the stars so bright
I’m sorry, dear, I can’t sleep tonight
Missing you, only you
Missing our time together, just we two
The moon is out, the stars so bright
I’m happy not to sleep tonight
As I think of you
Just you
