Something that Makes Me Happy: The Pacific Ocean

Yesterday, Ray and I took a drive along Highway One between Santa Monica and Oxnard, which, for the most part, borders right on the Pacific. The sun was shining, the water was deep blue, and the waves in many places were white-tipped and lively. In several spots, the ocean is only yards away from the road and the Highway Department was busy yesterday combating the constant erosion that threatens that lovely coastline stretch of roadway.

When driving along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH as it’s locally known), it is impossible not to recognize you’re right on the western edge of the continent. The Pacific stretches out as far as the eye can see, and its vastness brings to mind just how minuscule humans are in the grand scheme of things. One of the reasons I am so drawn to the ocean is its enormity. Whenever I am a bit overwhelmed, a trip to the Pacific will remind me to put my life in perspective. Sometimes recognizing what a tiny speck we occupy in the universe can be comforting.

The other alluring aspect of the Pacific – or any ocean for that matter – is the fact that underneath the surface lives another whole world of creatures, terrain, and geological events. There’s an entire ecosystem that is thriving just outside of our sight and the mystery associated with that world has always intrigued me. I would love to learn to scuba dive so I’d gain at least a small window into that hidden earthly realm. I must admit, however, that my usual forays into the ocean are limited to bare toes wiggling at the water’s edge.

Whatever the case, I’m definitely an ocean girl. Though I grew up in the plains, love the mountains, and can appreciate the beauty of the desert, nothing makes me happier than catching sight of one of Earth’s oceans. I’d love to see all five: the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, and Southern. However, my heart is already happy because I regularly get to view the Pacific. To me, that is the gift of all gifts.

How lucky can I be?
