5-Star Recommendation for “Somebody Somewhere” on HBO (Max)

I am in love with the series “Somebody Somewhere,” which is produced by the Duplass Brothers, who are only getting better and better at creating masterfully written television shows.

The best part of this series is that it depicts ordinary people in a small farming community in Kansas and allows them a whole range of emotions and interests. The word that comes to mind is “healthy.” This is a story about people much like the folks I grew up around in my little Texas town who led rich and full lives whether gay, trans, or straight. People who weren’t longing for a better place to live but rather were settled, happy, and whole. That doesn’t mean perfect, of course, but genuinely engaged in life and willing to change and grow as needed.

The series defies stereotypes, focuses on real issues that we all face when trekking through life, and doesn’t stoop to drama for drama’s sake. Life offers plenty of challenges without murder mysteries and car chases. This is a story about people grappling with love, loss, identity, faith, and forgiveness. All done without one false note.

You can find it on HBO (Max now). I highly recommend it, but it’s not for you if you are easily offended by off-color humor or bad language. If that makes the series even more appealing, then dive right in. You’ll be happy you did. I’ve included a trailer for your perusal.

Happy Memorial Day.
