Lessons My Mom Taught Me:

In no order and certainly not all of them:

1) Don’t give a damn what anybody else thinks. They won’t care long since their own lives will keep them busy.
2) Figure out how to be good with money.
3) Create a marriage that works for both partners; don’t be tied to traditions that don’t work.
4) Go to church on Sunday for spiritual and intellectual growth, as well as community.
5) Never say “It’s too late.” Just do what you want to do and don’t let the clock dictate when is the right time.
6) Read, read and read some more.
7) Never stop learning new information
8) Do not spend time around people who don’t support your dreams.
9) Go deep with a few subjects so you have an area or two or three of expertise.
10) Do not take for granted the gains women accomplished with the Women’s Rights Movement.
11) Recognize that life is usually limited to a handful of good and close friends.
12) Encourage daughters to do whatever they want in life.
13) Aim for financial independence so choices are greater.
14) Get as much education as you can so you have more ways to support yourself in life.
15) Be an equal partner in a marriage so that you have an equal voice.
16) Think critically
17) Never assume anything. Ask if you don’t know for sure.
18) Travel as much as you can and enjoy it thoroughly
19) Do not limit your dreams
20) When opportunities come around, seize the moment.
21) Talk about things, not people. The latter will only make you boring.
22) Do not expect people to always be there for you; sometimes they can’t be for reasons that have nothing to do with you. Forgive them for that.
23) Have a few passions that do not involve people
24) Ice cream for breakfast can be a wonderful start for the day.
25) Prioritize your days so you accomplish more.
26) Stay abreast of the news on a daily basis
27) Make your home a place you love to live in
28) Do not blindly follow anybody or any government official
29) All things in moderation including moderation
30) Pride is the sin to watch out for in yourself and others
31) Do not let other people tell you what to do. Decide for yourself.
32) Read more and more and more
33) Fill your life with a love of the arts
34) Gambling can be a lot of fun and also profitable if you do your homework first
35) Donate time to worthy causes.
36) Do not waste time on too much small talk.
37) Allow yourself to grow and change
38) Do not allow others to thwart your growth and change.
39) Get in positions of authority in order to bring about change
40) Never forget the power and potential of compound interest.
41) Pray regularly and trust in God’s guidance
42) Spend time with those you love
43) Dress tastefully
44) Do some things in life for the sheer fun of it
45) Do not be intimidated by anyone who wants you to cower
46) Remember to trust in your intelligence and don’t allow others to spoon-feed you drivel.
47) Love good writing and aspire to write well
48) Give time and energy to others
49) Live life on purpose
50) Love wholeheartedly

Thank you, Mom. What wisdom you shared.

I wish I could teach even half of this to my children — and grandchildren.

    1. You have taught them at least half just by being YOU, my dear.
