A Blight on My Hometown

The First Baptist Church in my hometown of Bonham, Texas, population 7,000, has banned the Boy Scouts from meeting at their church because of the Boy Scout of America’s decision not to discriminate because of sexual orientation. My thoughts: Dear God in heaven, how can we still be dealing with this sort of blatant bigotry in 2013?

I am deeply offended by the actions of this “Christian” church. What would Jesus do, you might ask? I feel certain that His teachings, which focus on LOVE, would never condone such prejudice.

As Pope Francis just said, “Who am I to judge a gay person?”

My only comment: Amen.

  1. Duh. Why is everything so complicated? They’re just kids.

It’s such a comedown when Christians aren’t “christian,” huh? It’s my opinion that most, if not all, religions are man-made and therefore based on man’s/humankind’s prejudices and bigotry. That’s why I claim to be spiritual but not religious but that sounds so pat and sort of specious, too. There’s not too many options, though.

  3. Thanks for writing this Len. As an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 33, I am appalled. The BSA offers so much to boys – including the SCOUT LAW, which expresses that a Scout is: Courteous, Friendly…in other words, tolerant.

They’re everywhere out there, my dear friend. Being in California, you’re once removed (or twice or thrice) from the cancer, but it’s alive and virulent here in the heartland. It is to weep. Thank you for sharing your outrage. I live in the middle of it and choke on it every day. Hugs to you. Ann

  5. I agree with sampatron totally. And even when a religion teaches tolerance and love, a huge number of its followers act otherwise.
