A Miracle Today at the DMV

Today, I learned there really is a God. He shone his glory down upon me the minute I walked into the DMV to renew my driver’s license. Granted I had set up an appointment online for 9:30, but I’ve done that before and still waited 2 hours. Today, I was prepared for the same. I had even made a point of charging my phone before arriving so I could respond to my email while I waited.

Imagine my surprise when there was no one in the “Appointments Only” line.  Or how shocked I was when a woman appeared out of nowhere, took my paperwork, and handed me a number that was called before I could even find a seat.

The clerk who handled my renewal even smiled when she greeted me. I don’t ever recall a smile from one employee at the DMV. She asked me if I still weighed 115 pounds. When I said, “I wish I did,” she actually laughed. My head is still spinning over that. She actually laughed again when I said, “Put down 125. I’m hoping to make it down to that over this next year.”

We had a few bumps with my eye test since I had a little halo effect with some of the letters due to a pesky eye condition. She didn’t seem concerned and passed me right through. I practically skipped over to the man who was taking the photos. How could this be? I had only been in the DMV for 7 minutes. Surely, I would get waylaid over at the photo booth.

The photographer was all business. Thumb print, signature, stand right there. I did as I was told, but then dared to ask, “How’s the photo?” He looked up and smiled. “Pretty good.” Wow. Two pleasant people at the DMV. Had aliens come down and occupied the usual people who worked there?

The photo guy gave me my paperwork and said, “You’re done.” I glanced at my phone. Exactly 10 minutes from start to finish. I kept pinching myself as I walked to my car. Was it possible I had just completed my entire driver’s license renewal in one sixth of an hour?

I have told several people today about my experience. Each has looked at me with skeptical eyes that read: You are LYING.

No, I’m not. I swear. Start to finish in 10 minutes.

Lord, Lord. I may go back over there tomorrow just to say hello to my new friends.  corte-madera-dmv-employees-keeping-up-with-lots-of-customers-on-a

That IS a miracle, Len! I will NEVER forget our times at the one in San Bernardino–San Antonio, TX, too! We finally found one in San Antonio that was never busy & backed up, so that was a blessing! Glad you had a pleasant experience for a change. 🙂

  2. A miracle indeed. Usually I am stuck there with a lot of very glum people for twice the time I’ve thought needed to be allotted. Sounds like you know what I’m talking about! Thanks, Pat.

  3. This truly was a miracle! Even on this side of the pond you have to schedule a half-day for the proceeding. Congratulations!

    1. Thanks, Tess. I guess DMV’s are all the same. Except on those miracle days!
