Almost There!

We are on the last leg of our trip to Texas.  It’s 11:37 and we’re about 45 minutes from Sherman.  We left yesterday at 1 pm Pacific time and we’ll arrive about 12:15 Central Time.  We stopped last night at around midnight and were up and driving by 7:30 this morning.  It’s a respectably long road trip however you look at it: 1525 miles.

There is is light rain right now, our first bothersome weather on the trip.  It is 34 degrees so we may squeak by with no ice.  Let’s hope that temperature doesn’t dip in the next 30 minutes.

America is on the holiday move.  We had waits for gas and lines for bathrooms in the truck stops all the way from CA to Texas.  This is a good sign that the economy is better.  We’ve made this trip before during this same time of year when it seemed no one was on the road.  So, that’s good news.

This is McKinney, Texas up ahead.  That means we are now 30 miles from Sherman.  Ray just said he saw some slush from leftover snow on the edge of the road.  The whole area had a snow storm on Christmas Day.  The roads are wet and we have the wind shield wipers on.  Honestly, this is the toughest part of the trip: the last 30 minutes on a slick road when we are so tired.  Still, I believe we’re going to make it!

The night is dark.  There is a complete cloud cover.  We have now left the city lights and are heading north towards the Oklahoma border.  We are listening to the radio: Marilyn Manson “The Beautiful People.”  A little creepy on such a dark, rainy night.  Now it’s Nirvana “Polly.”  That feels better…

On that note, I will close.  I will be back here tomorrow night.  Right now I am just going to celebrate being so close to our destination!

Where are you headed for the holidays?  Let me know, even if it’s to your living room.

Night night.

  1. I love following your travels fixing up your place in Sherman. For me that is a personal dream. My daughters and I are in Prague right now, heading home Sunday. I think this is my favorite city, as it offers so much culturally, and there is good shopping too. The architecture is especially wonderful, with a little bit of everything, Baroque, Medieval and Renaissance. Hope everyone is having happy holidays!

    1. Rosemary, What a wonderful trip for you and your girls. Prague sounds delightful. I have not been, but want to go! Thanks for keeping me updated.

Ah, I have been right there near McKinney so many times, Len. We were in North Texas (Haslet, north of Fort Worth) earlier in the week with our middle son and his family. We left on Christmas day just as the first big fat snowflakes began to fall. As we headed toward Houston we saw a number of cars that had slid into the ditch so I am thankful we made it back after a long tiring drive, and thankful that you have made your long trip once again safely. Today is our 49th anniversary, so we are celebrating with dinner tonight at Mia Bella in Sugar Land. Merry Christmas, and blessings for your New Year from this Texas friend.

    1. Happy anniversary, Mary Ann. I am so happy for you two. I hope your dinner was lovely, and you are now ready for another 49 years together.
