Long Day of Work and Anticipation

The dogs are barking outside. It is 9:43 pm and I have no idea who or what they are responding to. I am tired. I started today at 6 am, was cooking by 6:30. Pumpkin in the oven followed by yams. It’s tough when you just have one oven. Rachael came yesterday and we cut up Idaho potatoes to cook and mash, then chopped up apples for homemade cranberry sauce. All of that is prepared and in the refrigerator. This evening after students from 9 until 7, I made two batches of cornbread, toasted white bread for dressing, and made a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies.

Now, the dogs are quiet and I am ready for bed. Tomorrow I have students from 9 until noon and family arriving perhaps at 11. Oops. Oh well, they can get settled while I finish up and then the festivities can begin. This is my family from Salt Lake City – my sister’s son, his wife, their two kids, my sister’s ex-husband, and on Friday, my sister’s daughter. I adore these people so I can’t wait to see them. It will be even better when they are coupled with my kids, their friends, plus more of our friends on Thanksgiving Day.

But for now, I’m going to put my feet up. I think it’s time for that.

We’re having Thanksgiving at our friends’ home. Brian and Ellen are bearing the brunt of the work while our contribution will be deviled eggs, pimento cheese stuffed celery sticks, yeast rolls, mud cake and buttermilk pie. All food from the fifties made just like the granny ladies did it – from scratch.

It will be difficult deciding whether the cooking or the eating will be more fun, but the ultimate fun will be sharing with friends.

    1. Well, it sounds as if you two are bringing quite a lot. I’m sure it will all be delicious. Yes, the sharing with friends is the best part, eh? I agree heartily, though the eating is pretty good, too.

For yhe first time in forever, we’ve decidrd to go out to eat tomorrow jnstead of having Rumi cook. No leftovers, that’s OK. No clean up either.

    1. Going out on Thanksgiving. One of these days…

You two have fun while we’re over here doing loads of dishes!

Crying over Blueberries! Len, it has become a tradition that my family shares holidays & family celebrations at my sister, Trish’s, home. Pat or Patricia to others who know her. She always cooks the major stuff, turkey, ham, appetizers, etc. We all bring at least one side dish. This Thanksgiving I decided to prepare a new dish…baked acorn squash with blueberries. Sounded great, easy, & little prep. from the recipe description (10 mins.) & bake time 1 hr. To make a long story short…prep time maybe 1 hr. minimum. Looks ugly. Hope it tastes great. Looking for smoke & mirrors to jazz it up I’m thinking maybe blueberry pie filling! And, yes…I did cry real tears…& then laughed! Hope you & your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Very thankful for friends like you. Gonna b a grandma soon. Sooooo happy for you. It’s wonderful!
