A Baby On the Way

Yesterday, I got to see a picture of my first grandchild in utero. It was amazing the clarity of the picture. I could actually see the little tyke’s profile: his/her nose, mouth and chin. My daughter is four and a half months pregnant and we can already see our unborn baby’s facial features. This is unbelievable. I have not yet translated my daughter’s little baby bump to the existence of a real human being, warm and soft, ready to be cuddled. Of course, I am quickly shifting in that regard, beginning to eye babies in the grocery store and in strollers as parents and nannies pass me on the street. To say I am excited at the prospect of a new baby in the family does not begin to cover my growing awareness that I get to nurture a little child again. I adored raising my children. I loved watching them in their funny baby and little kid stages and then their bigger kid stages. The saying that kids keep you young is absolutely true. They bring new life into the picture – their lives.

So, I have a brand new little person to start thinking about and anticipate his/her arrival on or around April 5th. I am so excited. We don’t yet know the sex of this baby because the little one was modest yesterday during the ultra sound. Hopefully, by next month we will know if this is a little boy or girl. I have no preference – just healthy – but I don’t mind knowing the sex. That way I can start imagining whether we’re buying little dresses or little tee-shirts and pants. The very idea makes me smile.

Many of my friends assure me that there is nothing better than being a grandparent. I am looking forward to finding that out for myself.

Becoming and being a grandmother is almost better than being a mom. You’ll have such a wonderful time. Babies keep up seeing the world in new and different ways. I believe they keep us young at heart. Wonderful news!

    1. Yes, Tess, your words validate what I have heard about grandchildren. I can’t wait!

Wonderful! i loved being pregnant and having babies and mothering. But yes, becoming a grandmother (I am Granmary) is beyond amazing! I wrote letters/ journals to my granddaughters when they were in utero, telling them how much they were welcomed and loved, about our family and what we believed and celebrated, how I looked forward to smelling roses and growing the garden and cooking with them. I gave this letter to their parents on the day of their birth.

    1. Mary Ann, that is a wonderful gift. I am starting tomorrow! Thank you.

That is great, Len. With your amazing writing skills, it will be a legacy in more ways than one. I often think writing those letters was a gift to myself, but what a specific way to write a story to your grandchld that can only be told by you. Other family members can do the same thing, but yours will be the only one that is uniquely Len’s words to this precious new life. Blessings on this baby and you!

      2. Thank you so much, Mary Ann. I am looking forward to implementing your wonderful idea.

Congratulations on your new grandbaby! I know you are thrilled! You also have three beautiful daughters. I enjoy your stories and have learned so much about just from reading them.

    1. Thanks so much, Teresa. We learned today we are going to have a girl. I would have been happy with either, but I know a thing or two about girls. So, it’s time to look for some cute little dresses!
