Trying to Keep the Resolutions Realistic

Habits I Would Like to Cultivate in 2012:

I want to keep these resolutions simple:

1) Walk every day at least 30 minutes. That seems like nothing, but I will have to push to make this happen. I get into my sedentary routine and the next thing I know it’s three years later.

2) Write everyday. This blog has been excellent for this and I hope to continue this daily writing practice. At least 20 minutes a day, that’s the goal. Not hard, but it’s funny how “easy” habits turn out not to always been quite so simple.

3) Eat fruit daily. Again, a no-brainer and yet I can get out of this habit fairly easily.

4) Make an effort to get more sleep. I can’t promise on this one, but surely I can aim for 8 hours a night. That’s not what I have been doing, but this seems as if it should be a reasonable goal.

5) Stay in better contact with those I love. Again, what’s hard about this, but yet, I find days, weeks, months passing without a word to a few people who I hold dear. I just want to get better at more frequent contact.

6) Drink more water. Yes, we all need to do this. Why is it so difficult?

7) Steer clear of white sugar. I do this normally, but can get into a cheating mode. I’d like to remind myself that at 4’11” there is just not a lot of room for cheating on junk food. It shows pretty much immediately.

8) Read more novels. I have so many books I want to read. I just need to allot time everyday to sit down and do it.

9) Have a little more fun. I’d like to ride my bicycle and just go fool around. That would be a welcome change from the constant, “I need to’s…”

10) Do something new on a fairly regular basis: go to a new place, take a new route, read something I normally wouldn’t read, try a new activity, talk to a new person, etc.  I can get so stuck in my routine that “new” becomes more of a concept than a reality.

That’s all for now. That’s plenty. Of course, I want to eat more vegetables, lose weight, publish more, make more money, work less, have more fun, travel extensively, cook like a chef, go to the LA Phil every week, take up Salsa dancing, become a yoga master, wear stylish clothes, go on a public speaking tour, get a literary agent who loves my work, finish and sell my second novel, see my children often, keep my husband healthy, happy and bringing in excellent money, fly off to Paris, spend a girls’ weekend with my best friends, hike the Grand Canyon, etc. but I will keep the resolutions simple and hope the rest comes on its own.

    I resolve to keep moving forward- to stop talking about doing things and instead actually do them.

    1. I like what you’ve written, Jared. I will add that one to mine! Also, I want to do 10 push ups a day, even if 5 have to be done with bended knees. Got to keep up the upper body strength!
