Ray and I are headed to Spain on Thursday, a few days ahead of the Story Circle Network tour and writing workshop that begins on Monday. I am wrapping up my college and graduate school admission work with my students tomorrow, and so far, so good. All the personal essays and personal statements are strong, the supplemental essays show different sides of each student for the admissions committees, and everyone is moving from looking tired and overburdened to a little less stressed and maybe even edging toward relaxed. They are, after all, miles ahead of their fellow students who don’t have a college essay coach about to lead a writing workshop and sightseeing tour in Spain two weeks before the November 1 deadlines. However, pushing a little harder a bit earlier to complete all the work ahead of schedule brings a sense of relief and maybe even a good lesson in not waiting until the last minute to get things done. (Of course, my packing for the trip doesn’t fall into that category since that starts tomorrow—but we’re not counting that.)
I acknowledge that it could be argued that my tour timing is less than ideal. However, late October is a perfect month to travel, since the weather is still beautiful, the crowds are fewer, and the flights are cheaper. A little later in the fall means that we’ve moved into what the travel industry calls the “shoulder season.” That makes both airlines and accommodations slightly more affordable, which is one of the goals of these European trips I lead. I want people to have the opportunity to go who might otherwise not be able to afford that luxury. Ironically, I’ve found that there are also plenty of people who can afford a higher-priced trip who are eager to come along as well. After all, who doesn’t love a good bargain?
Ray and I will visit several museums before the official start of the trip, including the Prado and the Reina Sofia. Plus, we’ll rest a bit, wander the streets of Madrid, and acclimate to the time change. I tend to naturally overplan, but Ray is quick to remind me that we both need to be rested before Monday’s official tour begins. I know he’s right and am looking forward to a slower start. That will be a treat after this hard push to get everything wrapped up early. Maybe I am learning a little as I get older. It’s debatable—if you ask my family—but maybe I really am.
Excited!
