Bastrop Post Office Named After 1st Cousin, Billy D. Waugh, ‘Godfather of the Green Berets’

Today, husband Ray, brother Sam, and I attended the renaming of the post office in Bastrop, Texas, after my late first cousin, Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh, a highly decorated Special Forces officer also known as “the grandfather of the Green Berets.”

I saw many of my Bastrop family members while I was there, including meeting Billy’s wife, his daughter, and his granddaughter for the first time. (Billy was born in 1929 and was only ten years younger than my mother.) My first cousins once removed are the ones that are closer to my age and Johnny Sanders, who is the first person speaking in the video is one of those cousins. He is also the person responsible for making this post office renaming happen, which has taken three years.

With a Silver Star, eight Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars, and a Legion of Merit award, not to mention the reputation among his peers as a Special Forces legend, I believe no one is more deserving of this honor than Billy D. Waugh.

Well done, Cousin.

Also, fine work to Johnny Sanders for ensuring this honor came to fruition!
