My Husband Ray’s Homemade Products: Disinfectant and Face Moisturizer

During the pandemic, Ray decided to create his own disinfectant spray since he had an aversion to the smell of Lysol. The spray is comprised of rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide and has a slightly medicinal smell that dissipates quickly. It can certainly be counted upon to kill germs. We’ve been using Ray’s “product” as an air freshener every since and spray anything that might need a bit of disinfecting, like our backpacks after traveling. He puts the mixture in amber aerosol spray bottles and we have one in each bathroom here at the orange grove, which is currently six.

His latest invention is a moisturizer comprised of 100% shea butter, Vitamin E oils, and essential oils, such as tea tree for him, and an essential oil I wear called “Tranquil,” made up of lavender, patchouli, and sweet orange. He is expanding to include other essential oils such as sandalwood (which I love) and frankincense (which I don’t know if I’ll like).

I have been pleased with my first little glass jar (an amber one he ordered), and I am now on jar #2. He is expanding his test group to include our kids and a couple of close friends. Our kids tell me my face looks much better since I’ve used this concoction. Shea butter is typically a solid that you have to dip your fingers in, dig out a clump, and warm in your hands before spreading on your face and neck. Ray’s addition of Vitamin E and essential oils makes the shea butter softer and much easier to spread. Plus, I love that the scent matches the essential oil I already wear.

Forever enterprising, Ray is having fun with his new little venture. I’m happy because this moisturizer helps to combat the arid climate here in Ojai.

Thanks, Ray!
