A Walk with Little Ethan

I went on a walk with my 21-month-old grandson today
He is a master of being in the here and now
He saunters a while, then stops to pick up a rock on the gravel road
LIfting his new prize high for me to see,
"Wock," he says, then throws it down..
"Yes, rock," I say.

He heads to our old red tractor. "Up!"
I pick him up and place him on the seat.
He grasps the wheel and pretends to drive.
"Rum, rum," I say, and a small smile appears on his face.
"Down," he says, and I lift him from the tractor seat and set him back on the ground.
"Big tires," he says, patting the smaller front and much bigger rear tires.
"Yes, big tires," I say as we inch down the road.

More rocks, a stick he finds just long enough to whack the road
"Wun," he says as he takes off, and I move from saunter to trot to keep up.
He looks back and laughs. Watching Meemaw run is clearly amusing.

We stop close to a big rock, and he goes over and pats it. "Sit."
I sit down next to him, and we both look around us on this blue-skied day
"Big tree," he points, and I nod. "That is a big tree."
He gets up and walks over to the neighbor's fence. "Chickens."
I walk over and see there are chickens, indeed. "Yes, chickens."

We are in no rush. We have no place to go.
Out in the sun, strolling, noticing the world
We see more trees, birds, an airplane "high in the sky," and more rocks

Eventually, I turn him back in the direction of home.
"Mama!" he says and heads off with conviction.
"Yes, Mama," I say and follow.
