My Life Reflected in Bird Song

Walking through the orange grove this afternoon
I feel the cool breeze wafting in from the ocean
As the sun beats down and warms the earth
A nearby shrub jay repeatedly sings his high-pitched song
Weep-weep, waa. Weep-weep, waa

My life feels lately like that incessant song
Filled with good things and a few not-so-good
So much happening that I haven’t had time to process
My brain shifting from one event to the next
Without the chance to slow down and let it all soak in

Weep-weep, waa, weep-weep, waa
I feel as if that scrub jaw is beating out
My life’s rhythm at the moment
I look forward to the coo, coo, coo of the mourning dove
Then, I’ll know I’ve had time to reflect
