The Gift of New Glasses

Today, I picked up my new glasses, the first after my cataract surgery. For the first time in 3 or 4 years, I could see clearly out of my left eye, which was miraculous. I was struck with two things: 1) the ability of the brain to compensate so well that I had no idea just how much I was missing, and 2) the miracle of modern medicine that allowed for this return to 20/20 eyesight. If I had been born in another age, I would be virtually blind in one eye right now (and was for the past couple of years). Seeing the distinct leaves of trees out of my left eye and having the ability to see long distances with so much accuracy reminded me of when I was in 3rd grade and received my first pair of glasses. I was awed by the beauty of the world around me and I felt the same way this afternoon when returning home wearing my new glasses.

I am grateful.
