Lying here in bed,
I can hear your rhythmic ribbits
Right now, there's only one of you
But I know you have friends nearby
I can hear their serenade as I walk in the evening.
Water is key to your presence
And I'm grateful for the rain
That has enabled you to join us
In drought years, I miss your song
But not tonight, you are very much here
What is life for you, my amphibian friend?
You have lots to eat here with flies and moths,
Along with earthworms, slugs, and snails
You might even grow fat with the plethora of food
I'm glad you can enjoy the bounty
Your ribbit reminds me of my childhood days
Seeing you in creeks and streams
Your green skin and bright eyes
Always present, no threat
Your song brings me solace.

Aw Len, I love this. I grew up on a ranch and we had a toad named Slippery Sam. Well when I was a little girl I thought there was only one Slippery Sam! But how I miss that lovely serenade. XO Carolyn
