Last Day in Paris Before Heading Home

This lovely, busy, and life-affirming trip to Paris draws to an end tomorrow when Ray and I head back to Los Angeles with the help of Air France. Though our trip was short, we both agree we have had a wonderful time and are just fine with heading home. We are going to Sicily in October when I lead a SCN writing workshop and sightseeing trip and we can always stop by here if we choose. Also, since we both love Paris and, being the budget travelers that we are, we could plan another trip in the the next year or so, especially if there are new art exhibits to see. I found myself today wishing I could introduce my grandchildren to this lovely city. That might be another goal for the future.

Petite Palais

We started our day today with a visit to the Petite Palais, where there was an exceptional exhibition entitled “Modern Paris: 1905-1925. This centered on the incredible innovations in art and theater that occurred during this period with 400 pieces of art ranging from Picasso to Josephine Baker. It also covered examples of the art produced during World War I and discussed the effect of the war on the arts during that time.

Here are only a few paintings and sculptures to give you an example:

Landscape with trees by Piet Mondrian, 1912
The Bathers by Paul Gleizes, 1913
Tamara Karsavina dancing The Firebird, 1910
Marcel Duchamp’s Readymade, 1913
Picasso’s Design for a costume for Rite of Spring
Shell Explosion at Night by George’s Scott, 1915

We also visited several churches:

Notre Dame Restoration
Saint Sulpice. Thank you for the recommendation, Joan!
Interior, Saint Sulpice
Delacroix, 1850-1861
St. Germaine de Pres

We had a full day and were very happy that the clouds finally broke open and the sun shined through. A lovely ending to a trip I will hold close to my heart forever.
