Just how lucky can you get? Two rare natural phenomena in one day? The steady rain arrived at around eleven today from the tropical storm that had been Hurricane Hilary. Then at 2:40 this afternoon, I felt a strong jolt and heard the hanging pans clanging in the kitchen. A minute later, my phone had an emergency alert and the message read: Earthquake. Duck and cover. By then, we were already experiencing a much milder aftershock and the aftershocks continued consistently for several hours. The earthquake occurred 3 miles from Ojai and 10 miles down. Friends in LA said they experienced it too. (Oh, we just got another aftershock just now. The first in several hours.)
Ray was in another part of the orange grove and said he saw the land undulate.
All the while, the rain from the tropical storm was coming down, steady and heavy.
Who knew today would be so exciting!?!
We are fine. No damage whatsoever.
The rain will continue tonight. Where we are, all is well. Of course, we worry about mudslides on roadways and for people who live near a slope. We are on flat land so that isn’t a worry here.
Thanks to the many people who reached out to me via Facebook, Messenger, and text to check on our family. I appreciate that very much.
Below is a video of a neighborhood in Oxnard, where you can really hear the quake. Also, there’s one of a local Ojai restaurant that had a video cam on during the earthquake. It’s nothing dramatic, but you’ll see everyone was eager to get out of that building.
My heart goes out to the people who had damage from the earthquake and/or are still in the midst of the tropical storm.
We are feeling fortunate that we have had an exciting, but overall uneventful Sunday.
Again, thank you for reaching out.
