We saw this delightful documentary last Friday night in its west coast premiere and also had the chance to hear filmmakers Alejandra Vasquez and Sam Osborn talk about spending nine months in South Texas making this film. This is an inspiring documentary about Mexican-American kids in the Rio Grand Valley who come together in high school and, instead of singing in the choir or playing in the band, they participate in mariachi with UIL competitions that end up with state contests. It’s a story of how mariachi changes these kids’ lives not only through music but also by helping them connect with their Mexican heritage while experiencing camaraderie with their music teacher and fellow mariachi students. It’s sort of “Friday Night Lights” for mariachi instead of football.
The short film below tells you a bit about the full-length documentary. It is well worth your time, and if you ever have the chance to watch “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” it is a must-see.
Once again you have outdone yourself.
Thank you, Parker. Very sweet of you to say! Hugs to you and Gayle, my friend.
