The Broad Art Museum is in downtown LA and is named for Eli and Edythe Broad, philanthropists who personally financed the building of the $140 million museum designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The museum holds the Broads’ personal contemporary art collection of over 2,000 pieces and features works by over 200 post-war and contemporary artists from Andy Warhol to Ed Ruscha to Jean-Michel Basquiat. The building itself is beautiful, with what is called a “veil and vault” concept. The veil is a honey-combed designed structure that spans the ceiling and walls of the building and lets in natural light; the vault is the storage area for all the art that is not displayed or on loan to other museums and can be viewed through windows strategically placed in the building. This gives the museum-goer a literal window into what other art pieces are available for future exhibitions.
Below I have included photos of a few pieces of art that I particularly liked along with the title of the art and the artist.
This is a lovely museum to visit and it is also free. The Broads want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to view the art in their extensive and priceless collection.
