LA County Museum of Art and Friday Night Jazz

Tonight we went to hear jazz down at the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA). Every Friday night, people come from all around to have picnics on the lawn and listen to free music.

It was a happy and attentive crowd, who had brought lawn chairs, food, kids, and dogs out for the evening.  They had come to not only listen to music, but  also to honor Gerald Wilson, who at 94-year-old was honored with the Jazz Treasure Award for his longstanding contribution to jazz.  Gerald’s son, an outstanding musician in his own right, performed with the Anthony Wilson Nonet jazz ensemble.

The band played with Chris Burton’s art installation Urban Lights as the back drop.

This is a great activity in LA on Friday evenings, and it’s free.  It’s tough to get better than that!

I would highly recommend getting your picnic basket ready and coming on out.  Not only will you have fun, but you’ll also be supporting the arts.  That’s always a good thing.

  1. Is that year-round? Might be worth checking out when we come out to visit! 🙂

Since we are big jazz fans we have been to LACMA but not recently. What a treat to be on the lower plaza and near the Chris Burden lights. It’s always wonderful to hear friends perform.

    1. I believe it is. You can check to make sure at LACMA.org.

Definitely worth seeing if you’re in town.
